Step 3: Combustion Air and Exhaust System Installation

One of the most critical safety parts of a diesel heater system is the combustion and exhaust system. Exhaust pipes are not gas-tight and become extremely hot, so correct routing is essential.

Checklist Reminders:

  • Maximum exhaust pipe length: 6.5 ft (2 m), unless otherwise stated in your model’s installation manual.
  • Route pipes opposite to the direction of travel to reduce back pressure.
  • Direct the exhaust outlet downward and away from windows, doors, and vents.
  • Keep inlet and exhaust pipes separate to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Never direct combustion air intake or exhaust pipes into the cabin.
  • Secure pipes every 8–12 inches, with a maximum spacing of 20 inches.

You may shorten the exhaust pipe to suit the installation, but never exceed the maximum length stated in the manual. Always install the flange gasket correctly to prevent gas leakage.


Step 4: Fuel System Installation

  • Mount the fuel pump at a 15–35° angle with the connection end facing upward (this may vary on XL3 versions).
  • Secure and protect fuel lines properly; keep them away from hot surfaces, moving parts, and sharp edges.
  • Always use a separate fuel standpipe instead of tapping into the vehicle’s main fuel line.
  • Stay within the hose length limits specified for your model.
  • Use only the clamps supplied with the kit for secure, airtight connections.

Most reported cases of “Espar bunk heater not working” after installation are related to fuel supply problems, usually incorrect line length, wrong pump angle, or air leaks.


Step 5: Electrical Connections

Reliable power is essential for proper operation. According to the operating manual, voltage drop in the wiring must not exceed 0.5V on 12V systems or 1V on 24V systems. For 12-volt heaters, the low-voltage cut-off point is approximately 10.5 volts, and the high-voltage cut-off point is approximately 16 volts. For 24-volt heaters, the low-voltage cut-off point is approximately 21 volts, and the high-voltage cut-off point is approximately 32 volts. In both cases, the protection system reacts within approximately 20 seconds.

  • Connect the heater directly to the main battery, not through the vehicle’s power management system.
  • Remove the fuses during installation. When reinstalling, fit the heater’s 20A fuse first, then the 5A fuse.
  • Use the correct fuse ratings specified in the operating manual (typically 20A on 12V).
  • Secure wiring harnesses and keep them away from exhaust components or sharp edges.
  • Make sure all connectors are fully seated and any unused wires are individually insulated.

Most random shutdowns that occur weeks after installation are caused by electrical faults rather than heater failures.


Step 6: Final Safety and Function Check

The final step is commissioning. The operating manual states that the heater should be run at full power for 20–30 minutes to ensure stable operation.

We do not recommend it. Old hoses and ducting deteriorate over time. Always use new, genuine parts supplied with your kit or recommended in the operating manual.
